Leaving at approx 5am the outside trips (weather permitting) run outside Fraser Island either to the North through Break Sea Split off  Sandy Cape or through the Wide Bay Bar at the southern end of the island.  Large patches of coral reef are found here, like the Sandy Cape Shoals.  Water depth ranges from 10m on the shoals to 120m plus on the continental shelf.  

 

The fishing outside is a lot better than inside as less boats can access this area therefore more fish are abundant catching the legal bag limits on species is not uncommon outside.  Species commonly caught are emperor, Red throat, Sweetlip, cod, Tuskfish, Jobfish, Pearl Perch,Snapper, Hussar, Tuna, Marlin, Kingfish, Trout, Mackerel, Trevelly
